The second Yama, yogic virtue, listed in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras is SATYA, truthfulness.
Each ethic is meant to be expressed in a way that fully integrates the first yama on the list, which is loving kindness/non-violence.
How to do that? Truth can seem cutting, sharp, hurtful, unkind.
Buddhist teacher, Thich Nath Hanh, suggests the following practice. Before making a statement that has the potential of harming another in some way, we can ask ourselves:
Is what I’m about to say kind?
Is it true?
Is it necessary?
Imagine a world in which we cared enough to mindfully consider the weight of our words before speaking them.
This week’s recordings include brief reflections on the art of kind and clear communication. I hope you enjoy them.
